CBS EliteXC: Depressing

Wow, as an MMA fan I was hugely disgusted with the CBS EliteXC event. A few observations:

  • What’s up with the weird dancing cheerleaders during the intro? Seriously, this is MMA — not a high school basketball half-time.
  • For most of the first few fighters all I kept thinking was… who the hell are these people?
  • I had no idea females would be fighting. Cool. But wait, the female who’s supposedly the “face of female mma” couldn’t even make weight? That’s disgraceful — and disrespectful.
  • The announcers were doing way-more inflation than necessary. The countless comparisons with UFC fighters were silly. Robbie Lawler in the same class as Anderson Silva? Riighhtt…
  • The Lawler fight had a shot… and right when I thought things were getting good BAM! Finger-in-the-eye submission. You’re kiddin’ me?
  • Kimbo Slice may just be the most over-rated mma fighter in the history of the sport. It’s a shame too — he made 6 figures for a down-right depressing fight. In comparison with the UFC 84 payroll, it almost seems ridiculous.

Ok, I’ll agree — Kimbo can throw some bombs. But seriously, everything about some of these fights just felt heavily rigged. How can Kimbo be caught in a crucifix, taking a barrage of continuous elbows to the head (10, 20, 30??) and the fight NOT be stopped? Then stopped the next round because of a ear bleed. Hell, that ear looked like it was going to burst before the fight even started!

After tonight I can only conclude the fights to be: Depressing, Disappointing, and Rigged.

(Update) Seems like many of the comments at mmajunkie pretty much match my sentiments exactly.
